Don't let your dream become a nightmare - Safety tips for Italy.

Everyone has probably already heard of the infamous scourge of pick-pockets and scammers throughout Europe’s major tourist centers. Well, most of the rumors are actually quite true! But these scams, pickpockets, and other bad elements can be easily avoided so that your dream trip remains your dream trip and not a nightmare!

First of all, these scams and all variety of theft are less prevalent where there are fewer tourists. You will probably not find any such issues in small hill towns like Volpaia in Chianti or Spoleto in Umbria. If you’re at a major tourist center (think Rome, Venice, Florence, Milan, Napoli, Pisa, etc) there are a few things you will want to keep in mind.

  1. Don’t make yourself a target. If you stick out and look like easy pickings, there is a higher chance of you being a victim. Try to dress, look, and act as inconspicuously as possible.

  2. Don’t wear expensive clothes/jewelry. The average thief has telescopic vision and can spot a Rolex watch from two blocks away, an Hermes purse from 3 blocks away. Dress comfortably, fashionably, but without external signs of wealth, or you could be a target. An exception to this rule is when you are have an appointment at a specific location such as the theater or a fine restaurant or lounge. Generally, while you’re on the move (taxi, uber, or simply walking briskly), you’re less likely to be targeted. But if you’re flaunting your wares and simply milling around tourist locations looking up at the ceiling, you may be inviting bad behavior.

  3. Invest in a money belt (like this). The idea might seem tacky, but if they know that you don’t have a wallet or there is nothing to steal, they will probably leave you alone. We have recommended money belts to all our clients. It fits under your shirt and is the safest place to put money, credit cards, etc.

  4. Be aware of your surroundings. This one sounds trite, like a broken record, but it’s true. You are not in Kansas anymore and you cannot expect Kansas rules. If you know you’re in a tourist zone, don’t take your hands off your purse or shopping bag. if you’re going to stare and wander aimlessly at the sites, make sure everything you have is secure.

  5. Be mindful of your camera and phone. Make sure your camera has a strap and is strapped to your person. For phones, NEVER EVER put them in your back pocket, especially in crowded areas. Also consider getting a lanyard you can connect to your phone and tie around the belt-loop of your pants. Even if they get their hands on your device, they won’t be able to steal it without also stealing you!

  6. Be assertive. Scammers often try to pressure people into their scams. Don’t be afraid to let your inner meanie out. A firm NO followed by an outward facing palm is usually all it takes.

  7. Have a plan. If you have a plan and have done the research before you go to a place, you will know what to expect before you are there. You won’t wander aimlessly looking for something and you will be less of a target. If you need a plan or consulting, Travelista Italia can help ensure that you experience your own Dolce Vita!
